BOWLING - A SPORT FOR YOUNG PEOPLE

"Bowls is for all - men, women boys and girls. It is a game that develops a keen sense of competitiveness whilst also being, for many, a pleasant pastime enjoyed in a relaxed atmosphere.

For years the game of bowls was synonymous with the elderly but now this is not true. Young men and latterly young women have found the game fascinating, stimulating and demanding and there are now more young players than ever before.

In order to encourage this further there has been a concerted effort nationally to attract young people. Brightly coloured clothing, coloured bowls, junior competitions and under 25 tournaments have all gone some way to increase the awareness of the young.

There is no doubt in my mind that the future of the game can be enhanced by a further and continued influx of youth and I give my wholehearted support to the initiative being shown by the Northumberland County Bowling Associations and North Tyneside Council in providing a School of Excellence for Bowls."

The future of bowling is in the hands of the youth of today. As a result a youth development scheme has been set up to introduce and encourage young people to play bowls.

WHAT WE WANT TO DO
To recruit, develop, implement and co-ordinate a training programme for young people of North Tyneside and Northumberland.

To create a team of young people for North Tyneside to compete against other local authorities.

The success of young bowlers both as individuals and within teams will be given high profile through the media and they will be encouraged to assist with youth competitions and publicity.

To co-ordinate youth bowling activities between indoor and outdoor facilities and to ensure progress is monitored.

To encourage a school of excellence for Bowls at the Parks for all young people of North Tyneside, Northumberland, Newcastle, Biyth Valley and Wansbeck areas.

HOW WE WILL ACHIEVE IT ...
To promote the game of bowls (indoor and outdoor) for the young people in the County. Whilst this will be done predominantly at the Parks using their excellent indoor facilities, West End, Chirton and Collingwood outdoor facilities will also be used.

Coaching courses will be organised for clubs relating to the needs of junior players.

All Clubs in North Tyneside will be encouraged to promote the participation of Bowls by junior players.

The scheme would involve coaching at the highest level possible in the county to ensure that all taking part get the best opportunities available in the sport.

The emphasis will be upon including and encouraging everybody interested. This includes developing playing opportunities for both able bodied and disabled young people.

The groups organised will enable everyone to progress at their own rate of development.

ACTION POINTS
  • To organise and develop a North Tyneside borough squad for junior bowls.
  • Provide regular coaching for our young and talented bowlers to move forward from club to county and international level.
  • To gain accredited status with the EBA and EIBA to enable trained and qualified people to run coaching sessions.
  • To review and monitor pricing policies for young people in Bowls.
  • To inform all Clubs in North Tyneside of the planned developments and gain their support.
  • To hold competitions with other areas for the young players to gain experience.
  • Publicity material promoting junior bowls will be published.
  • All Clubs will be encouraged to develop a junior development officer position in their organisation.
  • To ensure that a comprehensive child protection policy is introduced and maintained.
  • To identify sources of equipment suitable for junior bowlers.

IN FIVE YEARS WE WANT...
To have provided the pathway forward for young talented bowlers from club level to county and international level.

To have given all young bowlers from all interested clubs in the county the opportunity to participate in coaching and bowls sessions to find our young talented bowlers for the future.

To have encouraged people to help and support these aims bothat club and county level.

TOURNAMENTS
Young people enjoy and learn from competitions. The intention is to organise leagues and competitions to help progress junior players.

Funding needs to be identified to support the costs of organising competitions.
